Established in 1786 three miles from the state’s geographical center in a compromise to satisfy Low Country and Upstate interests, South Carolina’s capital retains an ample supply of antebellum charm while being home to both the University of South Carolina and the spanking new Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. Fort Jackson, a U.S. Army basic-training post on the southeast of town, also has a presence. In 1865, Sherman’s Union troops torched most of the town, leaving an 84-block area in ruins. Emerging from the Civil War devastation during Reconstruction were an abundance of stately public buildings and lovely homes. Attractions range from the Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden, and an extensive collection of museums from the South Carolina State Museum, and the EdVenture Children’s Museum to Cayce Historical Museum, the Confederate Relic Room & Museum, and the Columbia Museum of Art. Nearby 50,000-acre Lake Murray delights water sports enthusiasts with boating, fishing, and more. City Market Antique Mall and Old Mill Antique Mall have their allure, and shoppers also flock to Columbia Place on Two Notch Road, Columbiana Centre at Columbian Circle, the Dutch Square Center at Broad River Road and Bush River, and the Richland Mall on Forest Drive.
